ABSTRACT

The concept of readiness is an important one in Single-session therapy (SST). This chapter discusses both client readiness and therapist readiness. In the author’s view Client readiness is a state of mind. Clearly, SST will not be effective if the person does not think they have a problem. Indeed, it is unlikely that they will consult a therapist if they do not think that they have a problem. It is quite possible for a person to have a problem and not want to address it. They are living with the problem for better or for worse, but have not reached a tipping point where they acknowledge the problem and want to address it. It is when the client has decided that they want help with their problem now that they are in a good frame of mind to benefit from SST.
