ABSTRACT

Client’s strengths are factors that are internal to the person and that resources are factors that are external to the person. There is a well-known phrase which indicates the role that resources that are available to the client play in Single-session therapy (SST). It is: 'Only you can do it, but you don't have to do it alone.' This means that while the client's internal efforts are the most important determining factor in the outcome of SST, external factors are important in aiding the person's efforts. The anecdote tells us that it is important for SST therapists to help their clients to identify resources that they can call upon to help them to solve their problems. Examples of such resources may be as follows. People known to the client who may be useful in some way in helping the client solve their problem; and people not known by the client but whom the client might consult for help.
