ABSTRACT

One of the tasks that the Single-session therapy (SST) therapist has in the process is to express themself with great clarity. If not, then the client will be confused, and a confused client will not derive much benefit from SST. In this respect, it is important not to overestimate the client's self-awareness. Good SST therapists are not afraid to state the obvious for the sake of clarity. The purpose of therapist clarity in SST is to facilitate client understanding. Given this purpose, clarity is enhanced under the following conditions. When the therapist speaks at a rate at which the client can follow the points that they are making: When the therapist 'chunks' information so that the client can digest what is being communicated; and when the therapist modulates their voice to convey meaning and refrains from talking in a monotonous manner.
