ABSTRACT

The role of the therapist in Single-session therapy (SST) is to "use their expertise primarily to help clients better use their own expertise". This facilitative role of SST therapists is a dominant one in the SST literature as evidenced by the contributions to Hoyt et al. The effective, active-directive, SST therapist would ask for the client's viewpoint on their problem and possible solution. SST as a fusion between what the client brings to the process and what the therapist brings to the process. The SST therapist will strive to harness the client's talents and encourage their use to achieve the client's goal. However, the SST therapist should also feel free to share something that the client does not know about or suggest a way forward that might be new to the client.
