ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses several characteristics of effective Single-Session Integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (SSI-CBT) therapists. The author’s view on most of these characteristics are also hallmarks of good SST therapists in general. Thus good Single-session therapy (SST) therapists can tolerate lack of information about clients; can quickly engage with clients; can be an authentic chameleon; are flexible and have a pluralistic outlook; can think quickly on their feet; can help the client focus quickly; and can use metaphors, aphorisms, stories and imagery and tailor them to the client. Ideally, the process of SST should have an emotional impact on clients. This may happen in the normal course of the therapeutic conversation, but it may be enhanced if the SST therapist employs a suitable metaphor, a pithy and relevant aphorism, an appropriate story or an image developed either by the client themself or suggested by the therapist.
