ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the indications and contra-indications for Single-Session Therapy (SST) with a discussion on these as they pertain to the service in which SST is located. It describes good indicators that SST flourish as a method of service delivery: service-wide support; proper training; ongoing supportive supervision; proper administrative support; SST embedded in service provision; accessible to the public; ongoing research and evaluation; continuing professional development (CPD); therapists should not only practise SST; links with other agencies where SST is practised, and provides training for others. SST as a form of service delivery might fail if the conditions are not right for it to flourish. When the following conditions exist and can't be modified, then they are service contra-indications for SST. If the agency in which SST is practised has no links with other like-minded agencies, then the SST will exist in splendid isolation and will eventually atrophy with the attendant risk to its continuation.
