ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the aims of the pre-session contact to gather information that could be used to tip the scales in favour of change for the client. The chapter presents a list of questions designed to identify the internal factors that the therapist might use to tip the balance in favour of change for the person: Strengths; Virtues; Values; Learning style – How do we prefer to learn that will have relevance to us by getting the most out of the face-to-face session; and Preferences for being helped. The chapter also presents a list of questions to identify the external factors that the therapist might use to tip the balance in favour of change for the person: Resources; Art, music and literature; Life as teacher; and Role models/influential figures.
