ABSTRACT

At the end of the pre-session contact, it is useful to ask the person to summarise what they will take from the contact that will help them in the session itself. However, some clients are not good at summarising themselves and would welcome some help with this from their therapist. It is useful, therefore, for the therapist, on the occasions, to summarise what was discussed in the pre-session contact. Sometimes, whether the person summarises the pre-session contact themselves or whether the therapist does it, the person may ask for a written summary from the therapist of what was discussed and a list of anything that the person has agreed to do before the face-to-face session. The author generally respond favourably to such a request, the exception being when this reflects a passive stance that the person has adopted which does not augur well for the outcome of Single-Session Therapy (SST).
