ABSTRACT

One of the challenges for the Single-Session Therapy (SST) therapist is to help the client take away something meaningful from the process that will help the client solve their problem. Quite often this solution-oriented factor is something that reflects a change in meaning for the client. It may be a reframing of the problem-related situation, a change in inference or interpretation or an attitude change. The more the person can remember this point going forward, the more likely it will be that they will be able to apply it in problem-related situations to achieve their goal. The SST therapist who is able to help the person convert the relevant change in meaning into a short, memorable phrase that the person can use in situ will, in fact, be encouraging the person to get the most from the process. These phrases can serve as personal maxims for the client.
