ABSTRACT

Once the client and the therapist have agreed on a solution, then, if possible, the therapist should encourage the client to practice the solution in the session. The client can practice the solution in the session in several ways. Mental rehearsal involves the client picturing themself implementing the solution in their mind's eye. If the client struggles to picture themself implementing their behavioural solution, they can be encouraged to imagine one of their role models doing so, again realistically and not perfectly. Then they can imitate the role model but in their own style. Behavioural rehearsal involves the client practising the behavioural solution in the session. When this involves the client acting in a different way towards another person, the client can do so while imaging the presence of the other or the therapist might play the role of the other.
