ABSTRACT

After the summary and the take-home task, the therapist should end the session. It is important that the client leaves the session with a sense of hope and commitment to implementing what they have learned and, to this end, the therapist should ask them how they feel about doing so. This gives the client a second way of raising any unfinished business. If the client responds with optimism, then it is important that the therapist reinforces this. Unless it has been agreed at the outset that no further therapy is available for the client, the therapist should remind the client that further help is available to the client if required. If a follow-up is to be carried out, then the therapist would have informed the client of this at the outset. At this point, the last thing the therapist should do is to schedule a date and time for the follow-up session, which is often conducted over the phone.
