ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a structure which serves as an example of how a single session may be offered. It is important to remember that it was created to be used in a particular setting – a student counselling service at a British university. The basics of confidentiality should be explained and the counselling service's booklet or policy statement online should be referred if the student requires more detailed information. The client should be educated about key strengths and resiliency factors, e.g. strong family relationships and friendships, positive outlook, spiritual convictions, sense of hope, feelings of personal control, creativity persistence and humour. The role of inner strengths and resiliency factors as crucial components of the process of moving forward should be explained. Initial data from the single-session based service showed that students valued the flexibility of the new system, the fact that they could be seen quickly and book an appointment at a time suitable to them.
