ABSTRACT
An essential part of a sustainable and inclusive economy is a closed loop approach to resource management which at the same time offers an inclusive economic opportunity for people involved in “end-of-life activities” in the circular economy of goods. The potential for a green and inclusive economy thus entails the creation of recycling systems that also ensures social inclusion and economic benefit for the Base of the Pyramid populations depending on and contributing to the recycling industry. For the incorporation of an inclusive perspective on recycling it is proposed to extend the environmental dimension of the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycling framework to include a socio-economic dimension based on the additional three pillars of Collection, Recognition and Remuneration. From a business perspective, support for the elaboration of sustainable recycling systems offers great opportunities. The organization of recyclers contributes to a collective claim for the work to be recognized and thus legalized and properly remunerated.
