ABSTRACT

This chapter explores those who have long since passed into oblivion, their place in the history of Chinese cinema misunderstood: the intermediaries. Who were they? To what extent were they responsible for the expansion of the American film industry business in China? What did they bring to the Chinese film industry? Employing extensive research in Chinese and American archives, this chapter attempts to demonstrate that intermediaries served as ‘matchmakers’ between Hollywood and the Chinese film industry. This chapter argues that intermediaries bridged the gap between the film industries of America and China, and made significant contributions to the evolution of the Chinese film industry.
