ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of the ways in which globalization is and has been measured by social scientists. After discussing the importance of measuring such a complex phenomenon, and the main challenges involved in doing this, the chapter focuses on the sources available and presents the main parameters of globalization in the long term, considering both its economic and cultural dynamics. Lastly, this chapter analyzes the principal data and indices that aim to quantify the present globalization process, describing their composition and assessing their major strengths and weaknesses.
