ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how national governments, which are powerful agents in the process of global integration, are adjusting their role by making use also of state-owned enterprises as instruments for their international political economy. After examining the importance of state-owned enterprises in the global economy, this chapter focuses on the transformation of their features and on their process of internationalization during the last three decades. Lastly, it covers the main problems and issues related to state ownership of such big players at the global level.
