ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the many forces working against globalization today. All the “gears” in the mechanism of global integration have jammed at the same time, and globalization is now becoming slow-balization (according to some) or even de-globalization (according to others). The causes of this are to be found in technology (increasingly weaponized), culture (increasingly negative about globalization) and the institutions of global governance, (increasingly inefficient and ineffective). At the same time, political factors also have a negative effect on the process of global integration: heightened tension in international relations, an ongoing geopolitical revolution, and last but not least, the rising influence of populism in many countries.
