ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the reasons for adopting a circular development pathway. The case studies confirm there are benefits accrued from adopting a circular development pathway in cities. In addition to the environmental benefits, the pathway creates healthier, more adaptive living environments; a more diverse economic base with a range of jobs; greater community engagement and social solidarity. These benefits are illustrated by the case studies and supported by the literature. However, these benefits are not equally shared across the population, thus producing social inequalities. The potential social disadvantages (especially to the urban poor) of adopting a circular development approach requires further research. However, it is argued that the social problems highlighted could be addressed, given the political will to do so.
