ABSTRACT

In assessing the per capita earnings in Battor the methodology of national accounting procedures used in Ghana was adapted to the data obtained. In 1954 there were 70 such small villages and hamlets within 10 miles of Battor which had some cultural affinity to Battor based on extended family relationships and which were known as 'Battor hamlets'. In particular no detailed records were taken of land under different types of crop along the entire riparian area and it was not possible to study fish production in creeks except those in the vicinity of Battor which were fished by Battor men. During the easier vacation 1964, eight students of the School of Administration, University of Ghana, undertook the basic mapping and enumeration of households in Battor and counted livestock and canoes owned by villagers. As in 1954, a number of local people were recruited as part-time field recorders and assistants.
