ABSTRACT

The film Her, in which the main character falls in love with a “voice” (IOS), serves as the backdrop for a discussion of the myriad ways digital devices are used for finding relationships and, for some, mates. The pros and cons are discussed. Voices are losing value as photographs are gaining value. Texting and sexting are preferred ways to court and seem preferable to face-to-face, body-to-body, visual, and touch contact. A comparison is made between courtship 25 years earlier and today. The analytic space is invaded by these devices and their sounds. The analyst’s anonymity has been compromised by Internet searches of their personal lives and writings. Positive aspects of all these changes are also discussed.
