ABSTRACT

Bob Hawke set out to end child poverty in Australia. Instead of creating an enduring legacy, he created his biggest mistake. In attempting to engage his futurizing voice in the absence of the lower differentials, Hawke failed to respect the hierarchy of differential voices. One of the worst kind of bad boss is the heartless commander; a leader that rules by fear and intimidation. A leader who has a strong prosocial voice without command voice is the social director. With the social director, there is plenty of back-slapping encouragement but no steel. Both versions of the social director, the one lacking heartfelt voice and the one lacking command voice, can be found in most organisations. When both the heartfelt and the command voices are missing, the result is a leader devoid of any substance at all. A social director tries to supercharge their prosocial voice in the absence of the heartfelt voice or the command voice.
