ABSTRACT

The leadership used to involve a large dose of physicality. There were a lot of beatings and a lot of stroking and grooming. Increasingly, though, leadership has become verbal and gestural. The leadership model is hierarchical, with the alpha male at the top. Contrary to popular belief, the alpha male is not established purely on physical strength or fighting ability. Males with leadership aspirations are the most troublesome in the troop. They are constantly disrupting the harmony. The troop is held together by the social structure and hierarchy as much as by physical strength. The alpha male must build an inner-circle coalition to back him up and leverage his leadership. Leadership of pre-cogs was through the heartfelt voice and command voice. The leader built a tight coalition of six to eight individuals using the heartfelt voice, which was the sapiens equivalent of chimpanzee grooming.
