ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 begins by explaining organisational networks as viable systems: embodiments of subsidiary organisations (which can be themselves viable systems), sharing purposes as well as operational rules, resources, and knowledge (i.e., dynamic capabilities). It focuses on studying a key complexity driver: how to distribute complexity through embedded recursive organisations and networks. It does so by exemplifying core organisational dilemmas related to the agreements and operationalisation of recursive networked structures, through case studies from comprehensive v&s projects: the design of the Omani Broadband Network, the re-design of a National Broadband Network in Latin America, and the (v&s) review of supply chain integration strategies in the UK Offshore Wind industry.
