ABSTRACT

This chapter further explains the idea of sustainable governance, from a v&s perspective. It reviews different contemporary approaches to governance and compares them with the v&s idea of self-governance for sustainability. It then suggests a framework to assess sustainable self-governance and illustrates its use through recent applications with endogenous communities in Colombia. It illustrates how the capabilities for sustainable self-governance relate to the design of community organisations, their structures, processes, and mechanisms for self-organisation. And how by intentionally reshaping these structural patterns, it is possible to improve the communities’ resilience and capabilities for managing more effective internal and external interactions.
