ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 explains how the VSM can be applied to promote systemic change in larger complex systems. It reflects on large-scale historical applications of the VSM in different countries and contexts; first, the Cybersyn project in Chile; then from five projects aiming to improve self-governance in the Colombian public sector in the 1990s. Coming up to date, it then reflects on recent experiments to assess organisational performance during the first two waves of the COVID-19 in an NHS Trust and in the Swiss Confederation. The positive result from these experiments demonstrates the usefulness of the v&s to support multi-level self-transformations, which are urgently required (importantly, but not exclusively) in the health sector and elsewhere, to deal with the massive societal challenges we are currently facing.
