ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on communication and interaction, the first of the four broad areas of need outlined in the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice for Wales and the SEN and Disability Code of Practice 0 to 25 Years in England. The Code for Wales acknowledges that some students require ‘support to compensate for the impact of a communication difficulty on learning in English or Welsh as an additional language’. The SRF for January, 2017, indicates that speech, language and communication difficulties and autism were identified as among the most common primary areas of need in state-funded primary, secondary, and special schools. Many children experience significant difficulties in understanding language and acquiring vocabulary and/or developing conversational skills, such as turn taking and adhering to the topic of the conversation. Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children programme is designed to combine cultivating individual strengths and interests with structured teaching.
