ABSTRACT
There is a great variety of speech and language difficulties in primary school children. It is often pointed out that the teacher should only give assistance in the case of speech and language problems which are more properly dealt with by a speech therapist or teacher of the deaf. The main purpose is to develop the use of language in thinking. Children exhibiting speech problems do not simply omit the sound but substitute one sound for another, e.g. 'toat' for 'coat', 'wabbit' for 'rabbit', 'chimley' for 'chimney', which present a difficulty for the listener. Language is a subject which is vastly expanding, both academically and in terms of treatment. Speech therapy requires a professional training which incorporates a degree these days in the society. Yet many children with speech and language problems are not being treated at the present time because of lack of resources.
