ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the story of the monumental effort to develop a set of sustainable development goals and targets that were intergovernmentally negotiated but influenced by people from all over the world and all walks of life. It argues that the Millennium Development Goals were the outcome of a drafting process led by the United Nations Development Programme, at the request of United Nation Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who had been mandated to prepare a long-term road map towards implementation of the Millennium Declaration. The book investigates the co-chairs had to learn the hopes, fears, strengths, and weaknesses of the different delegations. The importance of the selection of co-chairs for both the Open Working Group and the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda that followed cannot be underestimated.
