ABSTRACT

The term Devi connotes to one of the most pervasive identity markers associated with a vast range of goddesses. Furthermore, Devi's attributes as Grace, Rage and Knowledge overlap in Hindu religious imagination. This chapter focuses how each term is a plural construct and consequently how they merge with one another. Devi itself is a plural supernatural phenomena realized from rituals to the arts in the region. Devi is imagined by the devotee in such a way that she appears as Parvati, Manasa or Laxmi, to cite a few examples. One must have realized how Grace is understood as performance, Rage as magnificence and Knowledge as the order of intellect. The identity of Rage and Grace merge by complex human responses. The dual role of the goddess as rage and grace works under the configuration of power. Ganga and Sarasvati are two of the prominent goddesses who are rivers in literal sense.
