ABSTRACT

Henri Tajfel had been speaking English only for three or four years at this point and yet he is writing reports that are ‘lucid and effortless’. His human qualities are also evident. Henri return to France seems to have been relatively straightforward. Probably, like most of the prisoners of wars (PoWs) from Austria, he made his way back to France via Italy. For Jews returning to France, whether ex-PoWs like Henri or survivors from the concentration and death camps, readjustment to ‘normal life’ was particularly problematic. From the beginning, it is clear that Henri saw Lendemains as something of a therapeutic intervention for the hundreds of Jewish children scattered throughout France in Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants homes.
