ABSTRACT

The political system is not a thing apart, standing aloof from marriage and social structure. And the two systems, centring apparently poles apart, the one in marriage and munywalo and the other in rain-making, have been interlocked as skilfully as the most intricate piece of machinery. The lack of uniformity and the tolerance of almost contradictory customs may give the impression of ineffective political institutions. There is no need of a visible organization to support Lovedu court life, which is ceremonious, but not politically oriented. The district is a political and a territorial unit, often very small in size, and usually having a distinctive praise. The district is singularly autonomous in its political arrangements. In its visible structure, the political organization may appear unimpressive and in its dynamics chaotic. In the modern world the bonds of the social organization are liable to become burdens and the absence of a differentiated centralized political system a grave defect.
