ABSTRACT

The agriculture year includes two complete crop cycles—one in the dry season and the other in the rainy season. The two sets of agricultural operations are carried out on different kinds of land. The first kind is located in the flat bottom of the valley belonging to the village, and this is cultivated in the dry season entirely under irrigation. Sweet potatoes are the principal crop grown on hura land, followed closely by pennisetum or bulrush millet and several varieties of sorghum. In addition to his hura land, every man has a second set of fields, called magare, which are located on higher land sloping up from the valley. The Sonjo are skilful in attracting wild bees to their hives, and honey plays an important part in their economy. Honey is commonly used by the lower economic class in obtaining secondary rights to irrigation water.
