ABSTRACT

The introduction addresses a number of questions related to ideas about postcolonial Denmark: How may we understand the resurfacing interest in Denmark’s global history from exhibitions on the “tropical” colonies to restoration works “out there” and an accompanying rise in “colonial” tourism? What other predominant forms of contact/encounters between Denmark and the non-European world preoccupy contemporary Denmark? How are these preoccupations connected to similar hauntings in many other European countries – both those with and those without an imperial history?
