ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, “Fan Fiction,” argues that the television show Supernatural’s 200th episode and self-proclaimed tribute to its most steadfast fans explores the excitement and creativity of high school students as they transform (via a very “meta” narrative) Supernatural into a musical for their community. Unlike later chapters of this book, where trauma often accompanies the unplugged world, this section celebrates the joy two teen students, Marie and Maeve, experience when they bring one of their favorite stories to life through a combination of digital tools and material props. Additionally, the episode “Fan Fiction” reflects on brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and their preoccupation with material items like the 1967 Chevy Impala. Additionally, physical objects in this narrative show the audience that the characters here struggle with a lack of agency or free will. This powerlessness results from a rich material world that operates on macro and micro scales of being.
