ABSTRACT
Practitioners often view a film as a collection of pieces drawn from a variety of sources that are then manipulated and combined, resulting in a finished product that is invested with the hope that the sum far exceeds its parts. For this reason, filmmakers create and collect a variety of resources for possible use in post-production, and then they utilize these materials to create the final form of the film. Obtaining and utilizing coverage is the foundation of the practice of the post-production system of filmmaking. Coverage is a production term which is rarely discussed in academic work; however, it is a critical part of filmmaking, particularly in a continuity-based system. The chapter explores how filmmakers viewed the practice of coverage, a central concern for filmmaking, and its principles both before and during the transition to sound.
