ABSTRACT

A social ecology repudiates the intensification of rationality as it has hitherto developed, but not rationality as such. It pursues a new cultural and institutional direction for rationalization. Hence it can be referred to as rerationalization. The Enlightenment feminism seeks to rerationalize society so that women can participate fully and equally with men as rational citizens and both can eliminate ecological irrationalities. Enlightenment feminists suggest the immediate elimination of the arbitrary labelling of women and men in terms of alleged personality differences that have been used to oppress women. Enlightenment feminists who propose a Utopian vision of the elimination of all forms of hierarchy are in effect proposing a feminist version of anarchist social ecology. Anarchist social ecologists argue that the roots or the ecological crisis lie not in technology itself, but rather in the social conditions that result in harmful technology.
