ABSTRACT

Whenever engaging in battle, if the enemy comes forth to surrender, you must investigate whether it is a real or feigned. To be clear about distant developments you must establish scouts and lookout posts; day and night you 223should also continue defensive preparations, never growing negligent or lax. You must strictly instruct your subordinate generals to rigorously order the troops in order to await the enemy, for if they should then attack you will be victorious. A tactical principle states: "Treat an enemy's surrender as you would an attack."
