ABSTRACT

In general, the essence in the Tao of generalship lies in experiencing both the bitter and the sweet with the troops. Should he encounter dangerous and difficult terrain, the general cannot abandon his troops just to save himself. When approaching difficulty a general cannot look for devious ways to avoid it, but must preserve and protect his entire regiment, living and dying with them. II he does so, how can the soldiers of the Three Armies ever forget it? A tactical principle from the Ssu-ma Fa states: "When you see danger and difficulty, do not forget the troops."
