ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses service as a central component of the New Citizenship. It offers an overview of service on college campuses as well as a discussion of the president's plan. The chapter attempts to explain why service is so popular on college campuses and assesses its relationship to the New Citizenship. It connects service to civility and system stability. It describes that service learning and community service are important components of the New Citizenship. Many academic proponents contend that for community service programs and service learning to be successful in a college setting, they must be grounded in democracy and reflect various approaches to democratic citizenship. Students must see the connection between their college educational experiences and their participation in society upon graduation. The goal is for students to connect their service learning and community action problems with public policy debates and normative and ethical concerns regarding what constitutes a just society.
