ABSTRACT
Stretching some 1,200 miles from its border with China to its southernmost point in the South China Sea, Vietnam is shaped like two rice baskets at either end of a pole. The bulk of the population lives in the two baskets: the Red River Delta in the north and the Mekong River Delta in the south. The pole is the mountainous stretch of territory in the central, sparsely populated part of the country.
