Τhe final outcome of my being a contracted nation's worker was a good one. After my return from Ningna County, many things in my family began to change and improve. The Cultural Revolution was still raging on, but as I didn't join any special groups or take part in any "It's right to rebel!" activities, nothing serious happened to me. My wife was particularly happy about this. Political safety, she said, was a priceless gift for the whole family. In addition, with the money I turned in she bought a big mother pig for my father in-law to look after. That mother pig cost 100 yuan. With the remaining 70 my wife purchased several bags of grain. As a result, our empty containers were filled up to their necks. We would not go hungry.
