ABSTRACT

The equitable application of law and legal principles to the current and future environmental problems is the one indispensable requirement if we are to clean up the environment and arrive at an environmentally just society. The ways in which environmental law differs from other types, however, account for its unique importance. Environmental law encompasses the entire cycle of production from mining to transportation to manufacturing to consumption to waste disposal. Environmental law regulates the behavior of individuals hundreds of miles apart to protect their well-being. Environmental coverage has already become as much a staple of the news as the daily business report. Acid rain, global warming, and hazardous waste disposal are today’s issues; they promise to be supplanted by concerns such as indoor pollution and the disposal of radioactive wastes and by broad-scale questions about the relative advantages of the large-scale preservation of entire ecosystems.
