ABSTRACT

This chapter examines many of the dynamics that are at work in global economic development. In attempting to envision a humane future for globalization, the author begins by considering the values associated with a "civil society." The chapter examines the processes that continue to produce deep poverty and material inequality in the modern world. It shows some of the processes of globalization that have so greatly increased interdependence among the citizens of the world. The chapter presents the most fundamental values that ought to guide our thinking about the future and our relations with each other—human rights, the value of democracy, and the value of human equality, to name a few. The chapter highlights the deep importance of the values of fairness and human equality, as well as the importance of reshaping international institutions with these values in mind.
