ABSTRACT

Tanzania's historical place in the global economy has, from the colonial period to the present day, always been a marginal one. In Tanzania, though secondary schools have increased significantly all over the country, and Irqwa Da'aw has a secondary school in each ward, the percentage of young people who go on to study in secondary school and then university is very low. In schools, the youth are taught about the world outside of the Iraqw homeland. Elders view the changes pursued by younger Iraqw, in their desire to seek maendeleo, as threats to community harmony, which they assert is crucial to the well-being of animals, land, and people. The changes brought about by globalization are not seen only as economic. The struggles with development and globalization are often framed in moral terms. Witchcraft, sorcery, and divination are intertwined with ideas of success and failure.
