ABSTRACT

GRECE adopted the tactic of permeation—that is, of spreading new ideas and a new political vocabulary throughout the political elite on the extreme right and, through it, GRECE hoped, to the entire French political spectrum. GRECE has adopted the language and terms of the left and of antiracists for use by the extreme right. Altering the terms of French political discourse by gaining acceptability for new vocabulary of the extreme right became GRECE's primary objective. The real difference between the National Front and GRECE lies in the anti-Christianism and paganism of GRECE. The Club de l'Horloge adopted a pro-American, precapitalist, and pro-Catholic line quite out of keeping with the views of GRECE. Vocabulary battle was first joined in 1960s when extreme right intellectuals began to argue that the road to political power would be permanently blocked as the left defined the terms of political discourse. By 1993 mondial, mondialiste, and mondialisme had begun to replace cosmopolitanism in the Front's political discourse.
