ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the experiences of people who have been living in the education-jobs gap in recent times. The overriding reality for those on both sides of the gap is, as it was in the "dirty thirties", that there are simply not enough jobs of any sort to go around. This chapter presentation primarily attempts to let those living in the education-jobs gap speak for themselves. It focuses on personal experiences of the five objective dimensions of the education-jobs gap identified earlier; insiders' general perceptions of the gap between education and employment, and their sense of personal entitlement to a better job; and the role of further adult education and informal learning activities in practical coping strategies and future job plans. As most of the voices in the chapter testify, the education-jobs gap is not a pleasant place to live.
