ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores some of the many questions looming in Central Asia's future that may have partial answers in past and current practices. It begins with considerations of culture and background and then turns to some of the big questions in Central Asia's future. The book discusses ancient societies of Central Asia and the new states that have been superimposed over them. It also discusses the past and future of the peoples, the fabric of the societies, and the politics of new states emerging on ancient soil. The book traces the historical outlines of the Central Asian societies and their cultural institutions. It surveys the influences of the Soviet period. The book describes the pressures of the Soviet collapse and the achievement of national independence. It examines the horizon for the promise and possibilities—and the perils—that lie ahead.
