ABSTRACT

This section includes information on native minorities such as Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Native Alaskans. Several states did not permit Native Americans to vote in state and local elections, claiming that due to their unique federal status they were noncitizens. Barriers in the last two states that had limited Native American suffrage were finally removed as a result of successful lawsuits. Oklahoma would have to be considered the best state for native minorities in achieving political power. Alaska, where they compose almost 16 percent of the population but exert little political power, would have to be considered the worst.
