ABSTRACT

Anal sex is a favored sexual practice for many gays. Since the anal tract is apt to tear during sexual intercourse and semen from the inserter seeps into the receiver's bloodstream, anal sex is especially high risk for the receiver to contract HIV. Distinctive gay subcultures with special institutions, meeting places, a special argot, and distinctive folklore exist in many urban areas today. Homoerotic tendencies and relationships have existed for thousands of years. Homosexuality exists in tribes, bands, and other simple, nonliterate societies today and was probably present when these were the only societies in the world. Gays began to resist oppressive social and police measures. The most well-known resistance was the Stonewall riot in New York City. The sex-positive character of these sex institutions is depicted in the writings of a number of gay authors. The abrupt lifting of oppressive measures after so many years of persecution and denial probably contributed to the extreme form that sexual expression took.
