ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author takes a closer look at the individuals and the corporations that own social media. He gives us good reason to doubt the democratic nature of social media. The author encourages the reader to take social media seriously and to seriously consider becoming a social media maven. He highlights some good reasons to be cautious with social media. The practice of blogging really predates the concept of social media, but it is nevertheless an authentic form of social media in that it involves an overarching technology that is utilized to create and share media content. In terms of corporate interlocks, there are several at Google. L. John Doerr is a general partner at the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). According to its website, KPCB is an investor in a variety of technology and media companies, including Amazon, Twitter, Uber, Square, Google, Electronic Arts, Flipboard, Snapchat, Shazam, Spotify.
